In that contorted shape

I learned to be small when I was a boy. My neighbors, my family, my teachers; I watched their faces so intently. I took any sign of disapproval to heart. Wishing to be approved of, I bent this way, and that way, and this way again. I took on a crooked shape.
I learned to be shy when I was meant to shine.
I learned to be quiet when I was meant to sing.
I learned to look down, and bend towards the ground, when I was meant to look up towards the sky and grow.

I fell into a deep sleep, in that strange, twisted shape,
and
so very innocently
I woke up
believing it to be who I was
